I actually WANT a non-working Mouse :-)

Does anybody know how to turn the mouse pointer OFF under X?
Or if that isn't possible - how about moving it somewhere into the
corner?

Commenting out the InputDevice Mouse line in the ServerLayout
section causes the server (v4.01) to do the following:

(EE) No core pointer device specified
(EE) Unable to determine the screen layout
   (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

   Fatal server error:
   no screens found

Ideas welcome ...

Thank-you ...

How about just using a 100% transparent pointer, the mouse will be there,
but not visible... don't know how to do it though.

There is a tool called "unclutter" which turns the pointer off after
the mouse has been idle for some time. When you use the mouse, the
pointer appears again.

Don't know where to get it, search the web.

I've got a binary RPM for RedHat.
Mail me if you want it.

Yep your idea works (from ftp.x.org).  Cheers!!

Although in the end I redrew the cursor using
xsetroot -cursor.  I didn't think this would
originally work as the manual page says it only
does its stuff over the root background window.
However I am running Netscape in full screen mode
and Netscape evidently (and obviously now I look
at it) uses the root window pointer bitmap.  This
is A Good Thing[tm].

1. Where and how to install non-ported software (non-ported extensions to ports, actually)?

Some programs provide for extensions in the form of scripts or data
files.  One example is Emacs where one can install own Lisp
extensions, another example is Perl with its add-on modules.

What is the customary way to install such software such that the ports
mechanism and the own extensions don't step on each other's toes?

Alternatives which come to my mind:

(1) Install own extensions in right directory in /usr/local.

This has the problem that subsequent ports installations might
delete own files.  Suppose I take my Emacs site-lisp directory and
put it in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp, then a subsequent
install of, say, Ispell will install a Lisp file there which might
well delete one of my own.

(2) Install own extensions in some other dir and tell the program to
    use those.

This appears to be a good solution but it is clumsy.  Do you use
this solution and what directory do you use?

(3) Install two copies of each such program: one from the ports
collection in /usr/local, where only ports go and another one
    somewhere else.

This is duplicated effort.  Nevertheless, it has some appeal.  Do
    you use it, what directory?
