Screen & font corruption - Diamond stealth 64 & XFree

I have a 4MB Diamond Stealth64 Video 3000 which I have finally managed
to get working with XFree86, except for a screen and font corruption
problem:  the lower portions of the screen get corrupted by vertical
lines of dots, while the fonts used in xterm etc. are also corrupted.
The corruption is constant for a given letter in a given font - i.e. the
dots corrupting 's' in an xterm are always the same (except that more
appear with use).

Both problems get worse during use of X - in particular, if a command
generating a lot of text output is used in xterm, both problems get much
worse simultaneously.

What is happening, and can I fix it?

My best guess is that I am getting interference between memory on the
card where fonts are stored and the memory for the screen itself.

I have the same sort of font corruption with 312E on an ATI Mach64 and
the reason that I'm reading this group today is that I was hoping to
find a way to force a reload of all the fonts.  I generally never get
screen garbage (so long as 'no_block_mode' is in the Options line for
my video card) but this font corruption thing is really bugging me.

Hopefully this will just go away when 312F is released, but in the
meantime and in case it doesn't, how can invalidate the font cache
and force them to all be reloaded?  (Please email and post the reply.)
