Ftape does not work under X?

Ftape does not work under X?

Post by Stefan Viljoe » Sat, 29 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I recently got the ftape4.04a tape driver from Claus Justus Heine for my
system. I have an Iomega Ditto Max Pro tape drive on a Ditto Dash DX
accelerator card.

Interesting thing: it does not work under X! Meaning, I cannot issue tape
commands from a terminal emulator window. I have to restart in runlevel 3
and use it in normal console text mode.

Any ideas why this might be? Anybody else experienced this?

Thanks!

I'm using an older version of ftape, so things might have changed.
I doubt that X is the reason. Perhaps in runlevel 5 some modules are not
loaded, try to load them by hand.

What error message do you get? What's in the logs?

Nothing - it just starts backspacing and forwarding the tape, apparently in
an infinite loop, when you try to read the first time under X in a terminal
window. Writing seems to work fine.

Actually, it is not such a problem as I just do "linux 3" at the LILO:
prompt when I need to backup.

Thanks for the reply!

It goes into an infinite loop when I try to read anything off the tape.
Solution was to simply boot into runlevel 3 and leave X alone when wanting
to access the tape.
