Changing the default color depth...

Post by Dirk De Craemer » Tue, 05 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a Toshiba 200 CDS with a C&T 65550 with 2Meg of video memory.

I have tried in vain to tailor the XF86Config file to make X start up
with a bpp of at least 16
instead of with bpp of 8.  Does anybody have a working example of this.

Thanks,

Dirk

Hi Dirk,

look at the following snippet:
.....
Section "Screen"
    Driver      "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device      "Generic VGA"
    Device      "Matrox MGA 200 8MB 250 MHz"
    Monitor     "EIZO F77S"
    DefaultColorDepth     32
    Subsection "Display"
......

The line DefaultColorDepth     32 is used for determining the default
color depth.

Heya,

Try this:   startx -- -bpp 16

If it works, then you can add this to your ~/.xserverrc file:

exec X :0 -bpp 16

Or you can edit your /usr/X11R6/bin/startx script and change:

serveragrs=""

to:

serverargs="-bpp 16"

Best of luck,

1. Changing the default color depth in X ?

I did this with the "DefaultColorDepth" setting in my XF86Config. The
relevant chunk of /etc/XF86Config looks like this:

    Section "Screen"
        Driver            "svga"
        Device            "Toshiba 205CDS Video"
        Monitor           "Toshiba 205CDS LCD"
        DefaultColorDepth 16

        Subsection "Display"
            Depth       16
            Modes       "800x600" "640x480"
            ViewPort    0 0
            Visual      "TrueColor"
        EndSubsection
    EndSection

This seems to work fine.

Hope this helps.
