Netscape 2.0 release crashes like crazy

Post by dsea.. » Sun, 11 Feb 1996 04:00:00

The release version of Netscape 2.0 is constantly giving me bus errors.
All of the pervious betas were much more stable! I'm running RedHat 2.1.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Derek

I've got RedHat 2.1 and I've run netscape 2.0b6 and now the 2.0 release for
a week or so with NO problems.

Did you install the a.out library package?  I forget it's exact name.
Netscape requires these libraries, plus you will need the latest ld.so
package - I think it's numbered 1.7.11.  Netscape 2.0 is compiled with
a newer version than on the RedHat 2.1 cdrom.

Same problem here but I am using a relatively older version of slackware
Linux so I might have some problems with older versions of ld.so/a.out
whatever they are.

I will try it.

release crashes for me too.  Not that often, mostly when I have a news
window open and

Quote:> I have it call a web page.  It's the same error too, a bus error .   Hmm.

Well, on my machine it does not even start up. After complaining (like
mosiac) that it cannot allocate colours (#B2B2B2B2, 'green' etc) it bombs
with:
buserror.

So maybe an upgrade can at least solve that problem.

I love the net.  Here I've been wondering why I've been unable
to get some of my favorite sites lately, but before I've even
bothered to post to the net (what? me read the documentation?? :-)
someone posts the answer for me!  Thanks Mykeul, you saved me much
puzzlement.  Back to 8bpp I go, I guess!

It's a plot!!!  A plot I tell you!  The Vicious Video Card Cartel bribed
Netscape to do it, in order to sell more 4Meg video adapters to those of
us unsatisfied with the choice between posterized 8bpp images or 800x600
pixels or smaller!

1. Netscape 2.0 is Released (non-beta)

Netscape Corporation released the non-beta Netscape Navigator 2.0
on 1/26, apparently without any fanfare at all.  It's available
from the usual netscape sites (ftp[2-8].netscape.com) in the
/2.0/unix directory, filename is:

        netscape-v20-export.i486-unknown-linux.tar.gz

They are a strange company.  You'd think a release like this would
come with lots of hoopla, but it isn't even mentioned on their home
page.
