The 'fixed' font is in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc. Change to
here and see if all the fonts you would expect to see are
indeed here (there should be quite a few). If they are,
as root run mkfontdir (just in case). If not,reinstall
the fonts. Then check your XF86Config file in
/usr/lib/X11 for font lines. Ensure that the directory
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc is listed.
