X-Window && Dead Mouse

X-Window && Dead Mouse

Post by Theunis de Jong » Wed, 12 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hi

I have been running Linux for a while: first Slackware 3.0 and currently
RedHat 4.2. Whenever I run startx, X comes up, everything initializes,
but the mouse cursor will not move. About every 1/(alot) tries it does
start working correctly. If I kill gpm, the mouse cursor does move, but
the rest of X does not initialize i.e. black grid in background.

I have the problem under Slackware as well as  RedHat. My current X
Version is 3.3.1, upgraded from 3.2. I installed the patches available
from redhat's ftp site, no luck.

My hardware :
S3 Virge Video Card.
Microsoft Mouse
Epox Motherboard

I want to find out if this is a known problem, if not , where does one
start to look for possible causes ?

Thanks
Theunis de Jongh

Try looking at the gpm FAQ (this solved a similar problem I had with a PS/2
mouse):

Q: My mouse doesn't sense the middle button in X, while it works with
   gpm.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: Gpm uses a different decoder (see the previous two answers). You
   can use the `-R'' option to repeat mouse data to X (look at the man
   page).  However, as explained in the previous answer, this won't
   generate drag events for the middle button (i.e. motion while the
   button is down).

If the mouse is MSSerial 2.1a getting gpm-1.13 might solve it. Run it in
repeater mode:
        gpm -t pnp -R
and the Xserver should read from /dev/gpmdata
Read the docs.
