Font anti-aliasing with XFree/X11 ?

Post by Matti Roslande » Wed, 21 Feb 2001 00:25:07

How can I use font-aliasing (font edge-smoothing) with XFree86 / X11 /
Gnome /KDE, etc..
I read from XFrees site that it is a feature of the xfree base 4.x .

Are fonts in XFree really supposed to look so bad?

The answer will depend on your video card - only a few are supported for
AA

Yes - but it requires application support.

Yes. You'll have to wait until modified versions
of Qt and Gtk will be available - soon. Until then,
simply use TrueType fonts, which look better than
the built-in ones.

How could anyone know me - when I don't even know myself ?

1. Problem compiling XFree with font Anti-aliasing support

I installed Freetype2, edited host.def, and $make World compiled without a
hitch (54mins on my PIII-866 /w 128 RAM !!!!)

However it crashed in the middle of $make install with the following error:
-------------------
xf86Wacom.c:69: linux/input.h: No such file or directory
make[6]: *** [xf86Wacom.o] Error 1
make[6]: Leaving directory
`/root/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/wacom'
make[5]: *** [all] Error 2
make[5]: Leaving directory `/root/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input'
make[4]: *** [all] Error 2
make[4]: Leaving directory `/root/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86'
make[3]: *** [hw/xfree86] Error 2
make[3]: Leaving directory `/root/xc/programs/Xserver'
make[2]: *** [install] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/xc/programs'
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/xc'
make: *** [install] Error 2
-----------------------

What is Wacom? Do I need it? If not, can I disable its compilation? I'm
using Debian 2.2 (Potato) with a 2.4.1 kernel.

Thanks!
