Problem with xpaint

Hello:

I've got a bit of a problem with xpaint.

I'm unable to figure out why.

When I try to launch xpaint, it generates the following errors:

X Error of failed request:  BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request:  14 (X_GetGeometry)
Resource id in failed request:  0x0
Serial number of failed request:  617
Current serial number in output stream:  617

I figured that this probably meant that the dang window was trying to
draw 0x0, so I tried launching:

xpaint -geometry 100x100+10+10 &

But it generated the same error message.  It seems that if correcting the
geometry int he command line didn't fix the problem, then changing the
resources file wouldn't do it either...

I've got no idea what the hell this is talking about, and I need a paint
package, I keep booting windows to make gifs...

Can anyone out there give me a hand or point me in a direction for some
documentation?

Thanks veyr much in advance

1. problem compiling xpaint on SPARC

Okay, if this question is too obscure or difficult to pinpoint, don't
worry about it; I'll try a different program. Still it would be nice to
know what the heck is going on here:

I'm compiling xpaint-2.1.1 on a Sun SPARCstation. Things go fine if I use
"gcc" instead of "cc". The problem occurs whenI compile the files in
the /libtiff directory. Something's being redefined, causing my
massive errors:

---------- screen dump begins --------

gcc -o mkg3states -O -pipe   -I/local/X11R5/include   -DMISSING_STRERROR

etc., etc. for "fscanf", "fsetpos", "fwrite", "perror", "printf"
Has anyone seen the like before?

Thanks tons,
