In my case, that always happened when I tried to use xf86config to
generate the file. Try using XFree86 -configure, and work up from there.
I don't know why the xf86config files are invalid, but it seemed to be
the problem here. I'm using gcc 2.9.5.2, RedHat 6.0, Voodoo 3 2k.

from http://www.xfree86.org/4.0/DRI5.html#9

First, the XF86Config file must load the GLX and DRI modules:

        Section "Module"
        ...
        # This loads the GLX module
            Load       "glx"
        # This loads the DRI module
            Load       "dri"
        EndSection

        Section "DRI"
             Mode 0666
        EndSection

You need that even if you don't want to use dri.

it is loading all of that .  I added the mode 0666 to the dri section.
but that is all that was different.  Same error however.

I have the voodoo 3 3000 and i get the same thing! , only my texture
memory is something like 14 megs.
I've been trying all sorts of combinations and i just can get it to
work. Does somebody know if i have to download the drivers from
linux.3dfx.com ??

I get the same problem on my voodoo 3000 3dfx card. Although I got my
RIVA TNT card to work fine. Both configured using XFree89 -configure
and I even remembered to insmod tdfx.o
into the kernel. :)

I got same thing too. I have Voodoo 3 2k. I tried to use xfree -configure and
modify XF86Config but it didn't work. In article

Did you load the tdfx kernel module? Compiling and loading this
module solved this problem for my Banshee. The module is somewhere
in the XFree86-4.0 source tree ( find . -name \*tdfx\* , look
for something like "os_support").

> Did you load the tdfx kernel module?

The parts of the logfile with "(==) TDFX(0):" indicate, that the tdfx
module is loaded already.

I have had the same error messages. But what I discovered is, that somewhere
above in the logfile there is an additional unresolved symbol error listed:

From /var/log/XFree86.0.log:
=========================================================================
...
Supported additional Video Mode:
clock: 105.6 MHz   Image Size:  288 x 230 mm
h_active: 1152  h_sync: 1168  h_sync_end 1264 h_blank_end 1472 h_border:0
v_active: 900  v_sync: 902  v_sync_end 910 v_blanking: 938 v_border: 0
Symbol strlen from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libddc.a is unresolved!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(II) do I need RAC?  No, I don't.
=========================================================================

When I run the same XFree binaries (SuSE-6.4 XFree86-4.0.rpm) on the same
type of computer, but with 2x Matrox Millenium cards _and_ different (newer type)
monitor HewlettPackard-P1100, then everything runs fine.
Even with Xinerama over 2x 21" screens - Wow !
Interesting, that the above error line does not appear, and instead of that,
the details of the inquired monitor is listed
(with many more lines before "do I need RAC?"):

===============================================
...
Supported additional Video Mode:
clock: 135.0 MHz   Image Size:  364 x 291 mm
h_active: 1280  h_sync: 1344  h_sync_end 1536 h_blank_end 1688 h_border: 0
v_active: 1024  v_sync: 1027  v_sync_end 1030 v_blanking: 1085 v_border: 0
Monitor name: HP P1100

Serial No: JP85202743

Ranges: V min: 48  V max: 160 Hz, H min: 30  H max: 107 kHz, PixClock max 230 MHz
(II) MGA(0): end of I2C Monitor info

(==) MGA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
..
==============================================

This leads me to the assumption, that something is broken with the monitor
manufacturer data inquiry.
I have reported this problem to the XFree86 group, but not got an answer yet.
Is there anybody else with the "unresolved symbol" error.
Next thing I'll try is to plug in my Voodoo3-2000 PCI into the system with
the newer monitors and see if monitor data inquiry works.

BTW, the complained module libddc.a is part of the SuSE rpm package.

Finally I managed to get my Voodo3-2000PCI to run with XFree86-4.0!

The problem was, that the tdfx module expects *mandatory* to see two other
modules: glx and dri.

Therfor, the modules section should look like:

Section "Module"
  Load          "dbe"
  Load          "type1"
  Load          "freetype"
  Load          "speedo"
  Load          "extmod"
  Load          "glx"
  Load          "dri"
EndSection

Of course, you need to have these modules installed with your
XFree86-4.0 (rpm) package(s).
With SuSE 6.4, you can get the packages (rpm revs 4.09) from
 ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/X/XFree86/XFree86-4.0-SuSE/suse64

You can then call sax2 to configure everything with a nicely GUI:
sax2 -m dbe,type1,freetype,glx,dri

Hope this helps,
                   Joachim
