Greetings,

I posted this message to another newsgroup last week... time to
try my luck here.  Thanks...

Are you running an MP3 player, such as xmms?  From perusing the
WordPerfect newsgroups, it looks like there is a conflict caused by
these programs locking /dev/dsp.  Note that there are other, non-Corel
or WINE programs with the same problem - e.g. Mozilla - and the only
solution I could find suggested was to shut down the MP3 application.

Hope this helps,

John,

Nope, no MP3 players are running when the problem occurs.  Thus far, I
have tried
reinstalling WP8 and running it under several different window managers
(wmaker,
enlightment, KDE, etc etc...), but the problem persists.  My sound chip
is ESS Solo
1 which was newly supported (sort of) under 2.2.14.  I compiled that
kernel back in
April and I have not made any changes to sound configuration since
then.   Thanks
for taking a stab it at!

Brian

WordPerfect 9 refuses to run (X problem)

Post by Carlo Scarfogli » Fri, 26 Jan 2001 05:37:53

Did you try to change the display color depth to 32 or 16 bits? I
remember that WP8 has problems with 24.

WordPerfect 9 refuses to run (X problem)

Carlo,

I'm running XFree86 3.3.3 at 1600x1200 at a depth of 16 bits right now.
I have
run at various modes and depths with no difference in the behavior of
WP8,
however.  Time to switch to SO 5.2 or AbiWord I guess!  Very
frustrating!  Thx.

1. WordPerfect 8 refuses install!

I donloaded the seven segment WP8, untarred (tar xf GUI0x.GZ) and ran sh
Runme.  It asked me if I've unzipped and untarred everything (The files
don't need and won't unzip, so I don't know why it asked that) and then
it craps out with the error:

ERROR:  Nothing new to install

Anyone else seen this?  Got a solution?  Help!!!!
