XFree and Compaq Presario

XFree and Compaq Presario

Post by Les Diefenba » Sun, 18 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I have a Compaq Presario 4814 and RedHat 4.2. I'm having a problem
determining what type of video card the Compaq has. I can't find anything
on the 4814's video card, although other Compaq's seem to have something
called a TR106 card with 2 MB of video RAM.

Has anyone managed to get X running with a Presario 4814? If so could
they post a copy of their XF86Config?

1. XFree with a CL-GD5420 (Presario 433)

I am attepmting to get X up and running on a Compaq Presario 433 which
XSuperprobe reports as:~

First video: Super-VGA~
        Chipset: Cirrus CL-GD5402 (Port Probed)~
        Memory:  512 Kbytes~
        RAMDAC:  AT&T 20C492 15/16/18-bit DAC with gamma correction~
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))~

I can run 800x600x256 under Win95, and that is what I need under Linux.~

When configured with Xconfigurator I get the following message after a
startx:

(--) SVGA: chipset:  clgd5420
(--) SVGA: videoram: 512k
(**) SVGA: Using 8 bpp, Depth 8, Color weight: 666
(--) SVGA: Maximum allowed dot-clock: 34.167 MHz
(--) SVGA: There is no mode definition named "800x600"

Fatal server error:
No valid modes found.

If I configure it with with xf86config I get the following:~

(--) SVGA: Mode "480x300" needs hsync freq of 48.00 kHz. Deleted.~

Config Error: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config:542~

        ViewPort    0 0~
        ^^^^^^^^^~
Mode name expected~

Hence I just figure xf86setup is badly broken.~

I have looked at the Cirrus Logic notes for XFree users and found
nothing
that seems to pertain to my problem.  Also nosed around in UseNet to no
avail (so far).  i did get Metro-X (this is Redhat 4.2) to start it up
in
640x480 at 16 colors (useless).~

Urgently looking for hints,.  I am not an XFree or Graphics Card GURU so

please explain in "laymans" terms (but give me a router and a couple of~

switches).  I remember when I was a child my mother telling me "Cirrus~
Logic Bad",  but in the fever of youth we get sometime forget those
immortal~

P.S.

(--) SVGA: chipset:  clgd5420
(--) SVGA: videoram: 512k
(**) SVGA: Using 8 bpp, Depth 8, Color weight: 666
(--) SVGA: Maximum allowed dot-clock: 34.167 MHz
(--) SVGA: Clock for mode "800x600" is too high for the configured
hardware.
        Limit is  34.167 MHz

Fatal server error:
No valid modes found.

What does "Clock for mode "800x600" is too high" mean?  I added the line

 - Clockchip "cirrus"
to the display section of XF86Config, like something the Cirrus Logic
Notes
refered to. And this produced this new error.
