X crashes with "could not open font 'fixed'"

Xfree86 crashes with:

Fatal server error:
could not open font 'fixed'
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
giving up.

It also mention earlier that it failed top set default font path followed
by a list of the font path. All of the directories are there and I ran
mkfontdir on them all but still...
I'm running version 3.3.1 on an ATI 3D Expression with 4Mb.

right after starting   startx.

What's wrong here?  I am using mach64 4mb pci card, and Viewsonic 17ps.
