mouse problems

I have what would appear to be a pretty standard setup: Linux 1.2.13,
486 DX2/66, ATI Ultra Pro, Microsoft mouse.  X works OK most of the
time, but occasionally the mouse pointer goes ballistic, refusing to
point to the correct part of the screen and jumping around randomly in
the horizontal plane.  I've tried obvious things like killing gpm and
running gpm -R, but nothing seems to work.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dmitri

It might be that the circuitry in the mouse is a little fried. Is it a
two-button genuine MS mouse?  If it is a 'microsoft three button' type
then it may well be switching itself into three button mode. I have had
one that did this for no reason in X, but was fine in MS Windows.

Either buy a new mouse (they are not exactly expensive) or set up the
software to expect three buttons, much more useful. See my web page
for details.
