: I have what would appear to be a pretty standard setup: Linux 1.2.13,
: 486 DX2/66, ATI Ultra Pro, Microsoft mouse. X works OK most of the
: time, but occasionally the mouse pointer goes ballistic, refusing to
: point to the correct part of the screen and jumping around randomly in
: the horizontal plane. I've tried obvious things like killing gpm and
: running gpm -R, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

It might be that the circuitry in the mouse is a little fried. Is it a
two-button genuine MS mouse? If it is a 'microsoft three button' type
then it may well be switching itself into three button mode. I have had
one that did this for no reason in X, but was fine in MS Windows.
Either buy a new mouse (they are not exactly expensive) or set up the
software to expect three buttons, much more useful. See my web page
for details.
