MkLinux DR3 KDE problems

KDE will not allow me to execute "shutdown -r now".  Also, I have yet to
find a way to get out of the X environment -- logging out simply quits
X, then restarts it, presenting me with a login screen.  Isn't there
some way to properly reboot from KDE, as well as a way to get out of it
altogether?

The problem is that you are starting KDE automatically.  You need to
drop
into an editor and edit the file /etc/inittab .  Usually, all you
have to do is comment out the last line which starts KDE on bootup.
The next time you boot up, you'll be in console mode.  To get into
KDE, type "startx" (without quotes).

That's it.

How's about /sbin/shutdown -r now?

Hi,

If your /etc/inittab file sets the default runlevel to 5, you could change
this to 3.  You would then startup in console mode, type startx to get into
X, and upon exiting X you would end up in console mode again.

good luck

What's that suposed to mean?

CTRL ALT F1 (whetever) will change virtual terminal. Maybe that's what you
want?

If you want to reboot run shutdown -r now as root. Make sure it's in path.

The proper way to shut down KDE is to use KDM to do just that.I assuse that
you are using KDM. On the screen where you enter your
password you should see a button saying 'End session' or something
(right & downmost on my configuration. Dunno the text exactly, as I use
Dutch
version. 'Afsluiten' if that's any use :-) )
It should give you an option to halt the system, or reset and restart.
If it isn't there, which is probably the case, log in as root, go to KDE
control centre
and find KDM-settings. Change 'shutdown possible' (or something like that)
to 'Console Only'. Restart, that should fix it.
