PATH problems in X

PATH problems in X

Post by Matt Dora » Mon, 28 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hi,

I just installed RedHat 4.1, and I'm running X.  I used the default
installation of both of these.

When I run X my PATH is different to when I am on a virtual terminal.  I
want to change the PATH but I'm not sure how.

I've tried doing the following in my ".xsession" an:
        export PATH=$PATH:/whatever

but when I restart X something goes wrong and it drops me back to the X
login prompt.  (I have no idea why this would not work?) I've tried a
number of combinations of the above to no avail!!

Can anyone help?

Where do the paths for both X and the virtual terminals get set?

Thanks in advance,

Matt Doran

In your $HOME directory create, if you don't already have one, a
.profile file. To it add the line    export PATH=$PATH: #here is where
you put what you want to add to your path

1. add in the PATH a path if not present in the PATH

I look for a function in POSIX shell. this function must add path in the
$PATH if it isn't present.
by example:
I want add /bin in PATH
echo $PATH
--> /bin:/usr/bin
/bin is in the PATH then i don't add /bin
If I want add /usr/local/bin
/usr/local/bin isn't in the PATH then I add:
PATH=${PATH}:/usr/local/bin
