Odd. This method works if I lose my mouse in Linux. Did you remember to
wait about five seconds before returning to X? If I lose my mouse cursor
in Windows 98, then I have no choice but to reboot the computer. :(

I am using a Logitech (2 mouse buttons) with a PS2 conenctor and Omni
Cube (2-port) with Windows 98 and Red Hat Linux v7.1 and v7.2.
