Upgraded X server, now KDE won't start

Post by TowXW.. » Sat, 26 Apr 2003 03:03:34

Hello.

I am using RedHat Linux 7.1, kernel 2.4.7-10. I believe this distribution
came with XFree86 4.01.00 (not sure), which did not support my video chip,
an Intel 82845G.

I downloaded and updated the XFree86 server to 4.3.0, and installed it
on top of the existing "/usr/X11R6" as per the instructions. Had to tweak
a lot of things, but finally got it working.

Problem is, when I run "init 5" to go to the X-based login prompt, any
user who logs in will get the bare desktop provided by the X server itself
(I guess), which only displays an XTerm and a log console. The KDE window
manager (is that what it's called?) does not start, so I don't get the
menus and desktop settings I had before.

More strangely, if from init state 3 (multi-user text), I log on as
"root" and run "startx", KDE does start. But from init 3 as any other
user, running "startx" fails to start KDE. How do I tell the X-server to
recognize the presence of KDE every time the former starts?

Thanks for any help!

If you see a 'X' in my address, remove it before e-mailing me.
If you use an e-mail client developed by Microsoft, do not add me to your
electronic address book. I do not want copies of the viruses you receive.

Depending on the way X is started a variety of files may be used
to get the initial configuration. Some of these files reside in
/etc/X11 and its sub-directories. Check these. For users, check
~/.Xclients-default, ~/.xsession and ~/.xinitrc. It seems that
when you uppgraded, you overwrote the configurations in /etc/X11.

Upgraded X server, now KDE won't start

X can be started in a number of ways

X, xinit, startx will give minimal desktops. Usee man pages to determine
relevant configuration files.

'startkde' to start kde.
'gnome-session' to start gnome.

1. X won't start after KDE 1.1 to 2.0 upgrade

I compiled kde 2.0 from scratch to upgrade from my current kde 1.1
installation. Following successful compilation, I found I was no longer able to
start X-windows ("startkde" is in my HOME/.xinitrc and I use startx to start
the whole process). I get the following error message:

------------start error message-----------
Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
_X11TransSoocketUNIXConnect: can't connect: Errno=111
--------------end error message----------

I can successfully start X and kde 2.0 from root, but not from a normal user
account.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ollie Acheson
