Try putting "1280x1024" into the list of resolutions for 16-bit color in
the appropriate "Display" subsection. If it's first in the list it will
automatically come up in that resolution.

I have just installed Red Hat Linux on my system. My video
card is MGA Matrox Millennium, I have 4 MB of video memory,
and my monitor is UltraScan 17TX. I am stuck at true color
w/ 1024 x 768 resolution, and I would like to change that
to 16 bit color w/ resolution 1280 x 1024 (I know that my
monitor supports that). I have tried  CTRL + ALT + keypad+
but without success. Nothing hapens. I am using XFree86.
Question: How can I get to 1280 x 1024? Thanks. FC.
