Very Computer

   I apologize for this, but I am throwing myself on the mercy of the
net. I've been trying to set up X on my Gateway 2000 P5-90 XL, with
ATI GX Mach64 2MB VRAM video card and Vivitron 1776 17" monitor. The
problem is there is so *much* information around, I haven't been able
to process it. I feel like I did when I made the switch from vi to
emacs -- there was so *much* to learn I didn't know where to start.

   So, anyway, I've read a bunch of stuff here, and read the XFree-
HOWTO, and... I'm still not sure what to do. So, here's a list of
questions. Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.

1) Can I get XFree 2.1 or 2.1.1 running on my system with the video
   card I have, or do I need to upgrade to 3.1 or (RSN) 3.1.1? I'm
   running linux kernel 1.1.85, by the way.

2) If anyone could send me an Xconfig, or whatever it is you need
   with 3.1/3.1.1, that would be very helpful.

I have the same card and a ViewSonic 17. Does anyone have
a modeline that would work with my monitor?

Pal, are you in luck! I just set up the exact same configuration tonight!
A gateway p5-90 with ATI GX Mach64 2MB VRAM and Vivitron 1772 15" monitor (but
they have the same refresh rates -17 ot 15" sony).

I'm not at the machine I set up right now. Email me and I'll send you the XConfig
file. Meanwhile you can get the Mach64 server off ftp.cdrom.com. If you can't find
it I'll email it to you too. I got 1024x768 8 bit 75Hz Vrefresh and 640x480 going,
but was not able to get 1280x1024 going (the monitor and board support it).

I started with emaces. I still can't use vi.

You can grab the XFree86 3.1.1 binaries from
ftp.cdrom.com:/pub/XFree86/binaries/Linux I think. 3.1.1 uses the
XF86Config file (a little more organized than Xconfig). If you run the
xf86config executable, it'll set up the config file for you. I can't
advise you on much more because I also have a Mach 64 and I can't get the
modes to work right. I've actually been in X for a little while, but
things aren't smooth running yet. Good luck!
