S3:Unknown RAMDAC type "ibm_rgb52x"

Post by Anders Lindekran » Fri, 12 Jan 1996 04:00:00

I have a "no-name" S3-968 card with the ibm rgb524 RAMDAC, that I am
trying to configurate X for. I have run the configuration program and
selected RAMDAC "ibm_rgb52x" from the list in the config program. The
configuration seemed to be successful ending in writing the xconfig-file.
However when I run "startx" I get the following line (just before a "fatal
error"-message):

(**) S3:Unknown RAMDAC type "ibm_rgb52x"

This is one of the last lines of about a page of lines beginning with
(**). The rest of the lines seems to be informative messages from the
startup-process.

I would appreciate any clues to why I get the "Unknown RAMDAC type.."
message?

What version of the server are you running?

README.S3 with XFree86 3.1.2 lists "imb_rgb5xx" as a supported Clock Chip,
not "ibm_rgb52x", so try changing it to that.

Hi:
I have a #9 Motion 771 s3 card with the s3 968 chipset. It also uses an IBM
RAMDAC. In my config file for X I have the line, Ramdac  "ibm_rgb524" instead
of the line you have in yours. Try changing it to explicitely designate the
type of RAMDAC used instead of having "52x." This should help. I also
initially had the same problem that you have when I re-installed Red Hat Linux
and upgraded to XFree86 3.1.2 again. Luckily I had my old config file saved in
my DOS partition in case of any problems after re-installation. You could also
try running the X configurator again. It seems that successive runnings of the
configurator can generate slightly different scripts every time. I hope this
helps.

    Try  RAMDAC "ibm_rgb524"

        Change it so it says:

                Ramdac          "ibm_rgb524"
                Clockchip       "ibm_rgb524"

...in your XF86Config file.  That's the way it is in mine for a
#9 Motion 771, which uses the same s3-968 chip and the same ramdac, and
mine works great!

use

        RAMDAC "ibm_rgb524"

or just omit this line; the ramdac can be detected...

1. X gives "unknown RAMDAC type 's3gendac'"???]

Help!  I have just installed Slackware 3.5 to replace Slackware 3.0,
and have carried over any old configuration files that might help...

However, I cannot get X running!
I have an S3 Virge (c325) video card with 2MB.  It worked with Slackware
3.0, with the file XF86_S3V.  I copied the old XF86_S3V and XF86Config
into /tmp of the new install, just in case.
Upon providing information as shown in the old config file to the
xf86config program, I attempted to do X -probeonly, getting the
following output without X starting:

(**) S3V: Unknown RAMDAC type "s3gendac"
*** A configured device found, but display modes could not be
resolved.***

Fatal server error:
    no screens found

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno= 111  giving up.

xinit: Connection refused (errno 111):
unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3):
       Server error.

I also tried just copying the old XF86Config and XF86_S3V files to the
appropriate places in the new installation, with a symlink between
XF86_S3V and X, and once again tried X -probeonly, but got the same
"unknown RAMDAC type 's3gendac'" message.   Anyone have any idea what is
going on here???
Any advice would be helpful, I'm at my wits' end :(

Thanks in advance,
Jason
