Problems with S3 Trio64

Problems with S3 Trio64

Post by Shawn Edward » Wed, 25 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to get XFree86 3.3 running on Slackware Linux 2.0.??
using an STB Trio64 (Powergraph64) card with 2MB of DRAM which of
course uses the S3 Trio64 chip (86C764).  The monitor is a
Gateway 2000 Vivitron 1572 15". Everything works fine in Win95.

I first tried configuring XFree86 3.2 (from a CDROM set) by using
the xf86config program.  I found the card listed and filled out all
the info.  When I run "startx" I get a very brief flash of color and
then my monitor goes black and briefly makes some noise.
Alt-Ctrl-Backspace does not seem to work.  Linux is still running in
the background (I flip through some Alt-F keys and eventually I can
issue "shutdown -r now" even though the screen is still black).  I
have tried numerous configurations but I always get the same
behavior.

    I then installed XFree86 3.3 and I tried the xf86config program
again and meet the same results.  I then tried the XF86Setup program
and once I answer yes (to start the graphics) I get the same behavior.
I made sure I had the correct servers - XF86_S3 (and XF86_VGA16 for
the XF86Setup).  My card is supposed to be VGA compatible and it
should run with the VGA16 server.  I have again tried many different
configurations (mode lines, etc...) and always get
the same results.

I have read all the FAQS and HOW-TOs that I could find (except
for this newsgroup, which I have not seen yet) and have spent about a
week on this problem and I am getting nowhere.  Any advice would be
greatly appreciated!

Try running XF86Setup and reduce the horizontal and vertical
frequency ranges on the monitor setting. The same chip is on my machine
and runs VGA16 reasonably OK. (A bit oversized, but at least it scrolls)
It is useful to run XF86Setup as it warns of bad settings and returns
to the config session so you can keep tweaking till it works.
When I've entered the full frequency range for the monitor XF86Config
has warned that it is out of range. I assume this has something to do with
the limited clock settings detected in the chip/

Check that you have correctly set the horizontal and vertical rates
for your monitor.

The problem is that once I start up XF86Setup and hit enter on the
first question (start graphics or something), my screen goes totally
blank.  I did try reducing the horizontal and vertical freq. ranges when
using xf86config but to no avail.  No matter what I do, once I issue
"startx" my screen blacks out.  It almost seems as if my monitor goes
into sleep mode.

Try running:
X -probeonly  > /tmp/probe 2>&1
or
SuperProbe
to see what the X server is doing. The commands will run
the server without trying to output to the screen.

Also, try running the svga server as a start.
Do a:
cd /etc/X11
ls -l X
to note down which server is being used.
rm /etc/X11/X
ln -s ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA X
and try that server.
Also try settingup the SVGA modeline as the default.
That is make it the first modeline name in the screen section
modes. (you may have to modify the sync flags see man xf86config)

1. SVGAlib problem with S3 Trio64

Hello All!
I've been using Linux for about three years now, but ever since Redhat
3.0.3 I've been having a bad problem with any of the SVGAlib based
games.  Basically, I can play the game and so forth.  But, they won't
properly restore the console when they exit.  Usually, if I have X
running on another VT, it will screw that up too.  Then it's the good
ol' Ctrl-Alt-Delete to fix it.

Anyone know how to configure svgalib to fix this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...
