16 bit colors

Post by Barry D Benowit » Tue, 05 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I have been playing with 16 bit colors but I haven't got a jpeg that
will show me more that 256 colors. Can anyone give me a pointer to
one. So far I have seen nothing that would say I get a benefit to
running X in 16 bpp mode.

All jpegs should unpack into 24-bit color, even if they are converted
GIF's. 16bpp always has the advantage that if won't run out of colors.
Try running in psuedo-color mode and then running a few graphical apps
and a few XPM backgrounds. Pretty soon, nothing works right.

Hmm, color JPEGs are always 24 bit True-Color.
But you might notice some color banding artifacts in 16 bit mode with
certain images (example:

There *are* significant benefits, but also some odds as mentioned.
But I have a solution for that so you won't complain about the given
example. See http://www.esc.de/homes/guivol/fixpix/

For people who know this already: There is a new release (Nov 02)
which fixes bugs on platforms with 'strange' visual lists.

Guido

1. 16 bit color "emulating" 8 bit?

Hello --

I run X in 16bpp color.  However, I'm getting increasingly more annoyed
by the number of applications which don't support 16bpp.

Is there any way to have a TrueColor display "emulate" PseudoColor?

It's particularly annoying with the Caldera Network Desktop...With
all the icons, I seem to run out of colors rather quickly at 8bpp,
making me want to go to 16bpp.  However, I can't run everything
that I can under 8 bit color...

Ideas?

Thanks,
Dan
