Problems with WinFast (S3 864) card

Post by Thomas Martin Widma » Mon, 13 Feb 1995 03:44:29

Greetings!

I'm trying to install X on a Pentium with a WinFast acc. card.
According to the manual, this card is based on the S3 Vision864 chipset.
Unfortunately, the XFree86-Howto says that Vision864 and Vision964 are
not yet working.  I'm wondering whether this situation has changed (is
changing/will change soon), or do I have to buy another card?

Thanks in advance!

/TW

Please don't buy another card!
I do have this one, and I'm very happy with it.
I think you should upgrade your XF86 S3 server from patchlevel2 to
patchlevel5, and everything should work well...

Hope this helps!

your XFree86-Howto is way out of date.
but in your sever version (3.1 pl2) there are some minor bugs in the
code for your S3 SDAC 86C716 ramdac. you should get XFree86 3.1.1

I'm running XFree 3.1 with a similar card and it fairly OK (have som trouble
with
'screen-flicker' sometimes at high resolutions).

You should get the Patchlevel 5.

Is far as I know the 86C716 RAMDAC uses a programable clock, thus
there should be no clocks defined, at least I have not set up any clocks.
Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone !

Problems with WinFast (S3 864) card

I have a generic Vision864 with 2Meg of RAM.  I had some problems
setting up 16 bpp with XFree 3.1 (8 bpp worked fine), but now with
3.1.1 it works perfectly.

My monitor cannot handle 1280x1024, so the best resolution I have is
1024x768.

If anyone is interested in my XF86Config, I can mail it (or post it if
enough people are interested).

1. Problem with display/S3 Vision 864 video card

This is my first linux install.   I installed linux and set-up X86 fine,
but my display is low resolution and the windows are bigger than the
screen.  Also on the left side of the screen everything shrinks, text
and window's edges.

I am running linux on  DEC pc XL560 (pentium 90).
The video card is a S3 Vision 864 with 2 MB RAM.

Any good advice
