HELP!

Post by Michael » Wed, 24 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I downloaded 3.3.3.5 and compiled with no problems on my Red Hat 6.0
system. Now, when I reboot the boot hangs on, "Starting X Font
Server". Any help! Please....I can get into my system using single,
but that doesn't help. Thank you!

You mean 3.3.5, right?

When you installed it, did you issue a:
rpm -U package1.rpm package2.rpm etc

this will remove the old package and install the new one.  I remember a
few months ago when I was using Redhat 6.0, the x font server hung for
me too.  That is my best guess;  the old server is conflicting with the
new one.

Sorry my advice isn't more direct.  good luck

My guess is he downloaded the sources from XFree and compiled on his
own, ignoring the ports xfs is "supposed" to listen to on a RedHat
system.
Not sure XFree3.3.5 has xfsft compiled in either, in which case a
compile would mean loosing TT support. RedHat users in general are
better off upgrading with the proper rpm's - whether they want to
compile sources or just install a binary. That way you have a certain
assurance that various RH specific settings are OK.

If rpm's *were* actually used - install again with rpm -Uvh .... and
exit X before you do so, so it doesn't get confused by files modified in
mid run. If you downloaded an rpm of sources and then compiled -
something is weird. Give more info. Also notice that after upgrading you
should perhaps reconfigure your graphics card - i had some odd crashes
after upgrading via rpm's but a rerun of Xconfigurator (and a save)
cured that.
