truetype and freetype

Hello,
Can someone point me to definitive instructions on how to add
ttf support and fonts to RH6.0? I understand the xfs server has ttf
capability --does it need xfsft in addition? I have downloaded xfsft 1.2
tried to use ttmkfdir >fonts.scale and mkfontdir on my tt fonts, added
the path to the fonts to /etc/X11/fs/config and ...nothing. xlsfonts
seemed to show no change after restarting xfs.  Probably I didn't set
the right options or the right target directories or something. Maybe
I'm supposed to use xfstt.

Can someone who _knows_ how this is really done post the steps in
full detail, or reveal the webpage where they got the full story.
Consulting dejanews has not helped, google searches on xfsft have been
fruitless. Freetype.org has zero documentation on installing on any
given system, since they are committed to being cross-platform. RH has
nothing to say about this in the online install manual. The man pages on
ttmkfdir, etc.,  are  rather sparse.

A last detail, I am using the Nvidia supplied XSVGA server,
which is supposed to have been patched to include compat with the
true-type capable font selector.

Any help Appreciated,
hazzmat

Well, this is what I did for RH6.0, and once the smoke cleared,
I had some really nice fonts working.

Cheers / Frank..

My Updated RH6.0 True Type Fonts Howto

0. Make a win_ttf directory to hold the new fonts.

   mkdir /usr/share/fonts/win_ttf

1. Copy the *.ttf files from YOUR win95 installation

  mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

  cp /mnt/dos/windows/fonts/*.ttf /usr/share/fonts/win_ttf

2. Run ttmkfdir in your new win_ttf directory

   cd /usr/share/fonts/win_ttf

   ttmkfdir > fonts.scale

3. (optional) edit the `fonts.scale' file to your liking
     ( I skipped this !!)

4. run `mkfontdir' in the new fonts directory

   mkfontdir

3. Update /etc/X11/fs/config and add this new path
to the list of font paths.

  <snip>

catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
        /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/misc,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/100dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/Type1,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/misc,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/100dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/75dpi,   <-- add a comma
        /usr/share/fonts/win_fonts          <-- new line

  <snip>

4. Restart xfs font server.

   /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart

5. New fonts should be available.
   Check with xlsfonts

6. Fire UP Netscape and see the new fonts in Action.
See also Edit/Preferences/Fonts for new entries.

Cool !! Things look a whole lot better around here !!

ps: An occasional tap on the Reload Button when
changing fonts may also help initially.

Thanks,
It's going now, strangely though I seem to have to do an extra
step of editng /etc/X11/XF86Config. (slaps his forehead..of course!)
Hearing someone say they got it working on RH6.0 was very encouraging.
Also v. grateful for the quick response --nothing worse than posting a cry
for help and watch it languish, threadless, and finally die unanswered.

I think maybe my non-standard Xserver must look elsewhere than
/etc/X11/fs/config for the fontpath.

Thanks Again,
hazzmat

Yes, that got it at last. The standard instructions don't include pruning
/etc/X11/XF86Config, but that was my missing step. Thanks for the link: Font
de-uglification needs more promoters.
