XFree86 3.3.3 & S3 ViRGE -- Good News!

Last week, I asked about some issues I was having with XFree86 and my
Number Nine Reality 722 card (S3 ViRGE/VX 86C988).

I've since upgraded from XFree86 3.3.2pl3 to 3.3.3 and there's good news
and bad news . . .

+ Using the S3V server, I can now run at 24bpp and use Netscape with
color buttons. Xanim also now works at 24bpp.  (Yay!!!!) BTW--This was
one of the fixes over 3.3.2 noted in the READMEs.
+ Using the SVGA server, I can now exit and restart X without a major
system lockup. (Dare I hope that I will no longer have *any* X lockups?)
Also, I can run at 24bpp w/ 1024x768.

+ The SVGA server did not get the same fixes for 24bpp as the S3V
server: Netscape still comes up w/ monocolor buttons. (I didn't bother
trying xanim.)

So although the SVGA server now works better with my card, I'm still
using the (supposedly obsolete) S3V server. Although I don't get the
nice FIFO and PCI options, I do get acceptable performance.

In short, I just want to say THANK YOU to the XFree developers for
providing this interim release (even though they'd rather be finalizing
4.0). You've made this camper quite a bit happier.
