Cannot login problem

Post by Yusseri Yuso » Tue, 09 Feb 1999 04:00:00

My machine seems to have developed a problem overnight. I can't seem to log
in all of a sudden. I'm running xdm on Slackware 3.4, kernel 2.0.33, XFree
3.3.2. It was OK on Saturday but seems to have conked out on Sunday and has
been reticent ever since.

Anyway, the machine is networked to the dept. system. It didn't give me
this problem before. Basically what happens is that I'd log in, just about
see a glimpse of my console, xterms, biffs, etc. and get logged out
again. I checked the .xsession-errors file and here's what I've got:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Fvwm-95: in function main: <<ERROR>> can't open display :0

I've checked my .xsession, .cshrc, .login files and I didn't change any of
it recently. Strangely enough, I have no problem logging on to Solaris 2.4,
DEC Alphas or Redhat 5.1 machines, but I do get the same log in/log out
results from Solaris 2.5.1 machines.

I know I should ask my sysadmin, but he's gone off to the Caribbean (no,
I'm not kidding). Any ideas, anybody?

Cheers.

Yus

Cannot login problem

Post by Paul Le » Tue, 09 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I tried posting this earlier on, but my machine gave out towards the
end and it looked like it didn't get send- so, I'm trying again!

<snip>

Is this a "black" screen, or is the grey hatched background that X
provides?

Its a dark grey screen, no cross-hatching (at least if its there,
its too fine to see). The RedHat manual seems to indicate that I
should be seeing a large cursor 'X' somewhere on the screen-
but theres nothing at all there!

<snip again>

Quote:>I'll betcha the machine isn't dead, just the console is hung. if you

I haven't configured PPP yet, so I can't log in remotely, and my
machine is standalone anyway. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't produce any
discernible result when I try it.....

   >     sleep 30
   >     shutdown -r now

Thanks, I'll give this a try

Quote:>I can share bits/pieces/all of the config file with you if you like,
>if so lets move this to email.

Yes, please do!

<snip snip>

Quote:>Could be. But I'd think you could try the plain-jane VGA-16 server
>and at least make it work in 640x400x16. That might be worthwhile
>just to make sure you CAN get it to work even a little bit.

I tried installing a simple server (based on the instructions in
the RH 5.1 manual, on page 92), but it was only a half-hearted
attempt since I was so hacked off.
Needless to say, it didn't work (more "Grey Screen of Death"), but I may
give it a try again soon....

Cheers,

Paul

1. Cannot login problem

Hullo,

Posted this at c.o.l.x lastnight before figuring that it ain't exactly an X
problem. Anyhow:

Strangely enough, I have no problem logging on to Solaris 2.4,

results from Solaris 2.5.1 machines.

I know I should ask my sysadmin, but he's gone off to the Caribbean (no,
I'm not kidding, and he deserves it too). Any ideas, anybody? What did I
break?

Cheers.
