Linux on the Compaq 430C

Hi,

I am trying to get Linux running on my Compaq Contura 430C laptop. I have
installed Slackware (well Zipslack actually, but it's essentially the same)
and XF86 4.0. I can get into X, but the resolution is so low that everything
is massive and most things are off the screen and it is unusable. I set the
resolution to 640x480 but I'm sure what I have on the screen is a lower
resolution than that. Perhaps somebody here can help?

Thanks,
David

Hi,

Well I have made some progress after installing the VGA16 driver. I can now
get a screen open, which is in a nice high resolution at least, but it
doesn't get any further than that. No logon screen, no window manager, no
nothing. A control-alt-backspace brings me back to the console, but if I
want to attempt to run X again I have to restart. Any ideas why it's just
* like this?

Thanks,
David

The Technician is IN

Have no idead why it's* but lets try this your laptop has the
following driver "from compaq site"

http://www.veryComputer.com/#1

Western Digital WD24A2 Display Drivers
or also known as WD90C24 i think

as of Xfree86 4.0 and above the driver has not been ported.
from http://www.veryComputer.com/#25

3.3.6:     Support for the Paradise PVGA1 and the Western Digital
WD90C00, 90C10, 90C30, 90C24, 90C31 and 90C33 chipsets is provided by
the XF86_SVGA server with the pvga1 driver. The status of the support
for some of these chipsets is uncertain because we don't have any recent
test reports, and this driver has no maintainer.

4.1.0:     No native support for these chipsets, because the old driver
has not been ported.

Summary:    No Paradise/Western Digital chips are supported in 4.1.0.

Therefore you must remove Xfree86 4.0 and revert to Xfree86 3.3.6

I Hope thats not too painful. :(

Richard James.

Richard, thank you so much!!! I assumed that this driver would work because
the WD90C24 chipset is listed in the display list of xf86config, but as you
said it does suggest that it is unsupported and will only work with the
generic VGA driver. So now for my next question - how exactly do I remove
XF86 4.0? Or can I jsut install version 3.3.6 over the top?

Thanks,
David

Linux on the Compaq 430C

Hello again,

Well I ditched ZipSlack and downloaded the full ZipSlack Package.
Repartitioned my hard drive, and got to work installing it. I downloaded the
following sets: A (Linux base), X (X Window base) and KDE (KDE window
manager). Everything installed ok, and I ran XF86Config. Lovely stuff, I got
my card recognised and everything. I then get a message saying
"Congratulations, you've got a running server!" I click on "Save settings
and start server", then "Okay", and I get dropped back at the console after
the /etc/XF86Config has been written. I then type "X" at the prompt, and the
same thing happens as before - I get a screen open, with the default "X"
mouse pointer, but nothing else - no windows, no disk activity, nothing. I
can still get back to the console using ctrl-alt-backspace, so the machine
hasn't locked up. Any more pointers?

Thanks,
David

This is what is SUPPOSED to happen.

Start a window manager.  man startx, or xinit, or xdm ... (i.e. type
"startx", not "X" !!).
