HELP: Could not open default font 'fixed'

Post by R.. » Sat, 07 Jan 1995 01:08:00

After I installed and configured Xfree86 3.1 (on Linux 1.0.9) I tried
running startx. The screen clears and looks as if it is going into a
graphics mode. The following message appears after I break the program after
waiting for something to happen :

Could not open default font 'fixed'

I looked in XF86Config and the font paths looked ok. I also went into each
font directory listed there and used the mkfontdir program. Has anyone else
had this problem and been able to fix it ?

1. Font Problem: could not open default font 'fixed'

Edit /etc/XF86Config and remove that line or comment it and try again.
If you are using the XFree86 which loads by default it cannot handle
True Type fonts; a separate fontserver must be started.

And quit posting FreeBSD questions to Linux newsgroups.
