FIX:Diamond SpeedStar/GW2K CrystalScan

FIX:Diamond SpeedStar/GW2K CrystalScan

Post by BOBBY (ROBE » Tue, 28 Feb 1995 03:22:51

The following is for people trying to get the Diamond Speedstar and Gateway
Crystal Scan monitor to work with Xwindows.  E-mail any questions you may
have, and especially e-mail any other configs you ve found.

I ve been able to get the Diamond Speedstar to work with the Gateway 4"
 CrystalScan monitor in two resolutions, 640 x 480 and 1024 x 768.  I would
stll like to find a working configuration for 800 x 600, so if you see
anything let me know.
I use the freq program to change the clock on My video card.
This program can be found on sunsite and other places as speedstar-fix.tar.Z and
diamond.taz.  Instead of changing the clock, then typing startx evertime
i wanted to enter Xwindows, I included the following line in my .bash_login :

alias x='freq 66997 2; startx'

This clock setting can be used for either resolutions I ve included, although I ve
commented out the lower resolution and use 1024x768.

I also recommend reading the diamond FAQ, the XFree86 HOWTO and any
other documentation you can get your hands on.  I used the newer configuration
program to get my base XF86Config file (ver 3.x doesnt seem to use the
 xconfig file.)

The following are excerts from my config file.
WARNING: Pay attention to your hardwares specs, there are different versions
of the Diamond Speedstar and the crystalscan - these may be beyond the
limitations of your hardware.

Thanks go out to all who contributed to the various how-tos and FAQs and to

1. Wanted: (help) Xconfig, Diamond Speedstar plus/CrystalScan 1024NI

Please, Please, Please...

I know I can't be the only person running linux and X-windows on a gateway
machine, so if you too are running this card/monitor set up please send me
your Xconfig file so that I can get something besides 640x480 vesa running.

my exact set-up is:

Video Card: Diamond SpeedStar Plus w/1Mb Ram
Monitor:    Gateway CrystalScan 1024NI

I've been trying for about a week now with bad results.
I realize that I shouldn't implicitly trust anyones Xconfig but please
don't let that stop you from sending it to me! If I blow the monitor then I
have an excuse for my wife why I have to buy a nice 17in monitor and new
board. (Well you and I know the board would probably be ok still but she's
an artist and I want Hi-Color and 1240x1024 resolution someday :-)

anyways, I've tried computing my own modes from modegen and by hand from
the tutorials but nothing really creates a nice image that doesn't wrap and
I'm probably just torturing my monitor because I can't find decent
information on the monitor such as what it's horizontal sync rate is or
what it needs for a horizontal of vertical sync pulse.

so please send me those Xconfigs for this setup and you will have my
eternal gratitude!

thanks everyone!
