Message: X server slow to shutdown

Post by Steve Green » Sat, 09 Mar 1996 04:00:00

This is a giant step backward from Slackware 2.x  to 3.X.  I run X_w32
on a 486 DX4/120 with an STB Lightspeed VL with 2 MB dram.  X runs OK,
but everytime I leave it takes about 2 minutes to restore the linux
console.  The following message is left on the screen.

waiting for X server to shutdown ........

xinit:  X server slow to shutdown, sending KILL signal.

        waiting for server to die.

In the present setup, I cannot swap away from the X session to a
console; the machine just locks up.

Has anyone else encountered this with this particular card/server
configuration?  Your advice, suggestions, welcome.  Thanks.

I have had the same problem with my no-name Tseng ET4000/W32 Card and
XFree86 3.1.2. After I have installed XFree86 3.1.2D everything works
perfectly again.
XFree86 3.1.2D is available at ftp.XFree86.org or one of its mirrors.
Be careful, it's still a beta version.
