Mouse Systems 3-button PS/2 mouse - weird behaviour.

Post by Pravin Kurundod » Tue, 22 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hi,
I'm running the current version of Linux and XF86. I recently
bought a Mouse Systems PS/2 mouse.
Although the cursor moves "left", "right" and "up". A
slight down motion, causes the cursor to drop to the bottom of the
screen.
In the XF86Config file, I have protocol set to PS/2 and
device set to psaux. I treid setting it to MouseSystems, and that
doesnt work at all.
The h/w does not seem to be at fault since, the mouse works
well with Win95.
Any sort of info/help/advice would really be appreciated.
                Thanx.
                                Pravin.

This should be getting to be a frequently-asked question by now.  I and
several others have reported the same problem; and Steve Tell has got
it all figured out (Mouse Systems broke the protocol) and sent me a patch

Steve says the patch will eventually be incorporated into XFree86.  Meanwhile
the easy way is to patch gpm and then use gpm -R to send corrected mouse
data to the unmodified X server.

1. Mouse Systems 3-button "PS/2 Mouse" - Will it Work?

I just purchased a Mouse Systems 3-button PS/2 Mouse to replace a 2-button
mouse (the user couldn't stand using chorded middle).

Unfortunately, I can't get it to work with either gpm or Xree86.  The
mouse will move up and to the right, but simply jumps when you attempt to
move left or down.  I mostly tried /dev/mouse -> /dev/psaux, but the other
options (/dev/inportbm, etc. don't seem to work, either).

It's not a hardware problem, as the mouse works fine under Win95.  I'm
beginning to suspect and incompatibility with the linux PS/2 mouse driver.

Does anyone have any ideas/experience?

Also, I can't get test-mouse to work with ANY mouse I have, most of which
work fine with gpm and XFree86.  Anyone else?
