Aaaah! I was afraid it was my lack of brains. I have a Diamond Stealth
3D 3400 and EXACTLY the same thing happens to me. startx a few times and
it will freeze.
I changed to XF86_S3V and the problem seems to have dissappeared: I can
now startx as much as possible without crashing. BUT: when I run xdm and
I login and logout again a few times it always freezes. Just like it did
with XF86_SVGA after 2 or 3 times startx. Only now the videocard remains
in graphical mode, leaving a totally green or blue screen.
The only thing left is to press reset. Doesn't respond to keyboard
anymore and no ping reply.

A friend of mine recently installed Linux too (RedHat) without knowledge
of my crashes and 2 days later he called me on the phone, reporting the
same problem. He has a Stealth 3D 3400 too.

I tried and I tried, but I can't find any solution. Please help. (People
told me about membase and other XF86Config tricks, but I can't prevent
it from crashing)

My configuration:
Pentium 200
64MB
ASUS T2P4
Diamond Stealth 3D 3400 OEM
AWE 32 PnP
10Mbit ISA
Diamond Monster 3D
4x ide cdrom
17" Iiyama

I run Slackware 3.3, Xfree86 in 1280x1024 24bpp 76Hz using XF86_S3V

thanx in advance

Diamond Stealth 3D 3400 freezes XF86 Need help.

The following was posted a few weeks earlier and I saved it because it
applies to me too (I have a Stealth 3D 3000). It may help you:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------
If your having problems with the Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 Pro, and the
Diamond Stealth 3d 3000, in Xfree86, please read.
It's the "pro" part of you Stealth 3d 2000 that is giving you the
problem. It's designed for video in addition to regular display. This is
also a problem with many of the Stealth 3d 3000 cards(but not all). The
fix is to cut it back to 16bpp. You see, at 24bpp and 32bpp, the Stealth
3000 needs a special driver that handles the mpeg/avi video acceleration
features of these cards. But not at 16bpp.
Sometimes you can get away with running the Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 pro,
and the Diamond Stealth 3d 3000 at 24bpp and 32bpp. But chances are
you'll get the following problems:
XF_s3V server: lockups when user exits window manager, screen turns neon
lime green or red(other colors also reported, but these two are the most
common). However, this server works fine at 16bpp.
XF_SVGA server: works great, but acceleration at 24bpp or 32 bpp is not
complete!!!!! Boot up Netscape and you will see what I mean. The buttons
on Navigator will be in black&white.
These problems do not effect the Stealth 3d 2000 "classic", just the
Stealth 3d 2000 Pro and the Stealth 3d 3000 series cards.

1. Diamond Stealth 3D 3400 freezes XF86

Hi, I got this really annoying problem with my Diamond Stealth 3D 3400 OEM.
Here it is:
When I used XF86_SVGA, and I type startx, and quit X, and then startx
again, my screen turns black (switching to GUI) and then the whole system
hangs. Nothing works anymore (no ping reply, no alt-ctrl-del).
I checked comp.os.linux.x and many people have the same prob with Stealth
3D 3000's but no-one seems to have a solution.
I switched to XF86_S3V and startx doesn't freeze anymore. Instead, when I
run xdm and logout for the 2e time: bang! dead.

when I check comp.os.linux.x this problem must be common knowledge, however
I still can't fix it.

Please help.

My configuration:
Pentium 200 - 64MB - Diamond Stealth 3D 3400 OEM - Monster 3D - T2P4 - 17"
