Disable one of two video cards

Post by Simon Baile » Wed, 27 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I have installed Redhat 5.2.  It works well with my S3 video card but not
with my new 3dfx card.  That' ok: I would just like to be able to leave both
cards installed in my PC and have Linux use the S3 video card.
Unfortunately, when the 3dfx card is in, Linux has trouble talking to the S3
card.  Is there some way to disable the 3dfx card or help Linux work without
removing the 3dfx card?

Cheers

Thats a known problem with some old S3 chips (868 and 968, IIRC).
It has to do with both cards trying to use the same memory range.
Theres a memory remapping utility available on the 3Dfx site, alas
its for DOS only. I havent heard about a Linux version of it, nor
have I heard about a workaround. Maybe theres some way to change
the memory range for the S3 card with some spiffy settings in
/etc/XF86Config? Have a look at the S3 FAQ for XFree86, maybe theres
something in there ...
