Sounds like you have the wrong X server installed.  As for
modelines, post the resolutions and refresh rates you want
and maybe can post some modelines, else run
                /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
        and it will fill
                /etc/XF86Config
with a whole bunch of them for you to choose from.

Wrong Server? I installed RedHat Linux 4.2 right from the CD.
    I need modelines for 800x600  75hz
                                       1024x768 75 hz

I did try xf86config ...it did fill my XF86Config with modelines
but none of them worked...the server ignores them all and goes into 'built-in
mode' "320x200"
I have a Matrox Millenium II card and a CTX 1785gm monitor
And the latest version of Redhat linux 4.2
and lates Xfree86 server 3.1.1 or something like that...

1. CTX 1785GMe & Stealth 64 DRAM with XFree86 ?

Yes, good.  It has a nice collection of features for a low price.  I
run it at 1280x1024, and it looks sharp.  Mine has a little distortion
in the upper left part of the screen, but it usually isn't noticeable.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it recognizes a blank screen,
and can be set to power down in a user specified time interval.  This
couples nicely with the Linux screen saver.  The monitor goes into
sleep mode, and powers up again when the screen is refreshed.
