Trouble with XFree 3.1.1 and Diamond Stealth 64 VRam/PCI

Post by Stefan Stil » Sat, 11 Feb 1995 17:58:40

Hi,

I want to report of an unsuccessful attempt to get my Diamond Stealth 64
VRam/PCI Card to work with XFree 3.1.1! I completely installed
XFree 3.1.1 on my linux-machine and configured it using xf86config (with
btw has become absolutely easy to use). However, if I start the
XF86_S3 accelarated server, the screen simply goes black. If I switch
back to text mode, I can see the correct X-screen for fragments of a
second. Switching back to the X-screen from text-mode, the correct
X-screen is visible but the system crashes :-(

I conclude that my card does not work with XFree 3.1.1. But what to do
now? Since there are many reports that Diamond Stealth 64 cards are
running under Xfree, this might be a case for Diamond's technical
support. Or should I wait for XFree 3.1.2? :-)

Stefan.

Does the card work under other GUIs (to avoid saying a dirty word
starting with 'W')? Do you get any errors/warnings from XF86_S3 when you
start it? Did you try disabling PCI burst mode? What chipset is on your
card, which RAMDAC?

I've found there are three things you should check:

1. Make sure you've specified a RamDac in the XFconfig file.  The S3 server
isn't detecting the Bt485 if it's there.  That will hose you.

2. Verify the rev. level of the 964 chipset you're using.  See if X
reports it as rev level 1 or rev level 0 (when you start X, it will say).
If it is 1, see #3.

3. I've seen two reports of noise at all dot clocks/depths with the 964
rev1.  See if you're affected.  If so, let me know (I'm one of the two
   people)
