Gimp and xearth incompatible!

Probably this is an old one:

If you have xearth loaded and then try
to run GIMP (0.99.12)...GIMP can't load *at all*.

Try it!

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Are you sure? It works fine for me: RH5 (2.0.31) with
gimp 0.99.12 and xearth 1.0.

No problem here (Debian GNU/Linux pre-2.0)  I do have Gimp 0.99.14
though.

In fact, I see absolutely no reason that the two would conflict,
since, to my knowledge, xearth doesn't even use gtk.

I had a similar problem the other day when I was running xearth and then
ran Gimp.  My system crashed, the first time ever.  I was able to reboot
but found that my server couldn't view anything on the Internet
anymore.  I've tried a few fixes, but since I had barely loaded RedHat
5.0 on a brand new machine, figured I would simply reload the entire
package again.  Make a fresh run at it.
I was running X Windows in 16 bit color so that wasn't the problem.  I
had run Xearth and Gimp together before without any problems.  Something
that Redhat should address?
