virtual desktop on XFree86 332

Post by root of all ev » Tue, 01 Dec 1998 04:00:00

        I have recently installed XFree86 3.3.2 and
can't seem to get rid of the virtual desktop setting
someplace in the distribution.  I set up my XF86Config
and have the virtual settings commented out.  But yet
I get a virtual desktop of 1280x1024.  I usually run
at 1024x768 and do not need the extra real estate.
I am using fvwm for my desktop.  I have check the
usual places for the virtual desktop setting.  Could
it be compiled into the X binary?  Any sound suggestions
on how to turn this off will be appreciated.

TIA,
j.m.

roae,
Please check your XF86config again, you might have commented out the
wrong VIRTUAL... item, or you might have many XF86config files (i.e. in
the root?, or in <user>? or in /var )
GOD Bless,

I don't know if this is generally true, but it seems that a virtual desktop
is automatically made the size of the highest resolution specified for your
card in xf86config.  Do you have 1280x1024 specified as a possible setting
for your card?

Run Xconfigurator and only select 1024x768 or below for your settings.

virtual desktop on XFree86 332

In the XF86Config
Section "Screen"
    Section "Display"
        ????...
        Virtual      NNN NNN
        ???....

Change it to match the resolution you want to run (basically, setting it
up so that your running in 1024x768 with a virtual display set at
1024x768... thus, no virtual display. )
I've found that is what I had to do.

It'll fix your problem. However, if you Ctrl-Alt-<plus> through the
resolutions, you'll see that other resolutions will have the virtual
display set at 1024 (or whatever you make it).

Cheers,

1. Q: 800x600 or better from 9FX Reality 332 & XFree86?

I understand the Virge chipset in the 9FX Reality 332 video card that's
installed in the Dell Dimension I just received isn't supported in XFree86.
At the moment I don't need all the whiz-bang features I'll have access to
once the S3 server supports this new card, I just need 800x600 or better
resolution out of the thing.

I've been able to get it up in 640x480 w/ the VGA server. Does anybody know
of a way to go higher?
