XF86Config problem -- rapid horizontal scrolling

Post by Andrew Lawren » Wed, 07 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I'm having problems getting X to work again.  The hardware being used
is a Diamond SpeedStar driving a Mag PMV 1448 monitor.  XFree86 version
is 3.1

I have been using XFree 2.something for a long time without any problems,
but replaced it when I reinstalled onto a new hard drive.  After some
rearranging, all of the old settings in my Xconfig produced a working
XF86Config for 3.1.  This worked for a while without any problems, then
just stopped.  I've tried many of the suggested Modelines from modeDB.txt
without any success.

The problem is that the screen appears to be scrolling rapidly from side
to side, within a fixed vertical region, and sorta scrolling vertically
in the same region.  Hard to describe -- its a really odd effect.

Here's the Modeline that used to work:
ModeLine "1024x768" 65 1024 1120 1328 1360 768 769 772 796

And here's one of the many 640x480 lines that work:
ModeLine "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525

I am having no problems with 640 by 480, but the 1024x768 has worked
on this hardware in the past, so I see no reason why it shouldn't still
work.

thanks in advance,

Have you tried putting

  Option "fast_dram"

in your XF86Config file?  My ET4000 board needs that because the default
memory timings (setup by the BIOS) are for slower DRAM than is
installed on the card.
