Problem with Velocity 4400 card with Riva TNT graphics chip

Hi everybody,

I am in a complete impasse with this.  I just cannot get X to start
successfully in the SVGA mode.

I have installed XF86 3.3.3.1.

I have created many XF86Config file with both xf86config  and XF86Setup
utility.

I have also used a sample XF86Config file from Michael Ryder (who have got
this card to work successfully).  It was very gracious of him to extend all
the help to me.

The problem is everytime I startx  I only get windows with   *VERY VERY*
large fonts.

The messages on the console screen goes like this:
==================  Start of messages =========================

SVGA:  Chipset:  generic
SVGA:  Videoram: 64K
SVGA:  Clocks : 25.18
SVGA:   Using 8 bpp, Depth 8, Color wt: 666
SVGA:   Using built in driver modes
SVGA:   Built in mode 320x200

Virtual resolution set to 320x204
Speed up code selection modified because  virtual X  != 1024

================== End of messages ==========================

CASE II.
When I try to start with 16 bpp using the following command:

startx -- -bpp 16

The X server  does not even start.
I get the following message on the console

==================  Start of messages =========================

SVGA:  Chipset:  generic
SVGA:  Videoram: 64K
SVGA:  Clocks : 25.18
SVGA:   16 bpp not supported for this chipset.

***  A configured device found.  But display modes could not be resolved.
================== End of messages ==========================

So,  what is the verdict?

Is my X installation flawed?  Do I need to reinstall XF863.3.3.1 ?

Or is there a easy switch somewhere to throw and get this problem solved?

Regards,  Somnath

I myself have had this problem, and in fact the first time I installed
linux,I had absolutely no trouble whatsoever, but then my hd died and i
have to start all over.  And now i'm in your boat.  It's not a problem
with having to reinstall XFree.  I've reinstalled numerous times.  Its a
problem with the XF86Config file.  Manually edit it after it is generated
by XF86Setup or xf86config to tweak it for you r system... I am actually
going to do that later on tonight and hopefully it will work.  If it does,
I'll post my XF86Config file here to help you.  If anyone else has a
RivaTNT, Could you possibly post your XF86Config file here?

Thanks

I too am at a loss. I have a STB nVidia TNT AGP card. I downloaded the current
version of XFree86 3.3.3.1 and, well, I ended up reinstalling RedHat 5.2. I lost
everything. I could get the generic vga16 grapics to work but not the SVGA
server. Any advice would really be appreciated. I'm back with my STB Velocity
128 and it works like a charm as always.

by chance do you have a video out (for tv) on the card ? if so make sure that it is
not connected to anything, had that problem with a different card.

1. Problem with Velocity 4400 with a RIVA TNT graphics card

Hi everybody,

I am in a complete impasse with this.  I just cannot get X to start
successfully in the SVGA mode.

I have installed XF86 3.3.3.1.

I have created many XF86Config file with both xf86config  and XF86Setup

SVGA:   Built in mode 320x200

Virtual resolution set to 320x204

CASE II.
When I try to start with 16 bpp using the following command:

So,  what is the verdict?

Is my X installation flawed?  Do I need to reinstall XF863.3.3.1 ?
