16bpp or 32bpp OpenWindows? HOW?

Post by rbod » Mon, 03 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Is the OpenWindows only 8bpp by default? That's what it looks like to me.
When I try running 16bpp or 32bpp, I get the BLACK and WHITE colour scheme
in X.

Where can I get a OpenWindows source (or binary) which will compile on
Linux [or is already for Linux]?
I tried compileing several versions, olvwm4, 33truecolor 4trucolor,etc
from Sunsite, Mit, others
- I could never run   make   successfully and I was not successful in
getting rid of the errors it came up with.

ps. how can I tell which version of Openwin and Xview I have?

Create the file .xserverrc in your home directory with the right
command for starting your X server in 16bpp mode. For example:

        exec /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 16

This should start the server in the mode you require when you use the
"openwin" command.

1. How to switch to 16bpp an 32bpp

: I'm using xf86 3.1.1, and I have an ATImach64.

: It works fine in 8bpp mode, but I don't know how to switch to
: 16bpp or 32bpp mode, which mach64 should support.  I'd set the
: appropriate stuff in the xf86config file already, but ctrl-alt-+
: can only switch between the resolution mode, not the bpp mode.

Try xinit -- -bpp 16 or xinit -- -bpp 32.  xinit or startx should work
the same way.
