Problem with Viewsonic P775

Problem with Viewsonic P775

Post by Mr O. K. Petters » Wed, 22 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I have encountered a rather unusual problem with my new pentium system.
The 17" Viewsonic P775 has twice now blown something while changing screen
modes.  The problem is probably a combination of the monitor and the ATI
V264GT/Pro 4Mb videocard while running under linux.  I suspect possible
over driving, but want to rule out any other possibilities as well.  The
monitor is being looked at by Viewsonic, but am wondering if anyone has
any ideas.

The exact problem is this:  While exiting from Xwindows to the single
user terminal screen mode the monitor goes fuzzy, makes a buzzing noise
and then dies.  On both occasions this has been the exact same method that
has killed the monitor.  Linux was the operating system in use.  The
resolution of the Xwindows display was I think about 1280x1024 in 16bit
colour switiching to 600x800?? in terminal mode.  Its possible that there
is something in the software that is being run in the wrong order.  Any
help welcome.

I don't monitor this group on a regular basis so please email all replies
to the address below.

Hmmm...  I have the exact same monitor, purchased about a month ago.  I'm
running it at the exact same res. and color depth as you in Linux, and
24-bit in NT, and have yet to encounter any problems.  I have a Matrox
Millenium I with 4MB.  If it has happened twice, I would be suspicious
about the video card.

Likewise, I have a P775, and I've run it in resolutions from 320x200
(for video game emulators) to 1600x1280 in 8-bit, and up to 1280x1024
in 16 and 24-bit, with no problems.  I've also run two X servers at
different resolutions at the same time, and swapped between the two
and the virtual consoles with no problems.  I also have a Millenium I
with 4Mb ...

(ok, this is a bit of a "me too", but I've confirmed that the P775
handles any resolution I can throw at it with no problems.  I'd
suspect your card too)

1. Problem with Viewsonic P775

I have encountered a rather unusual problem with my new pentium system.
The 17" Viewsonic P775 monitor has twice now blown something while
changing screen modes, both my own and a temporary replacement from
Viewsonic.  The problem is probably a combination of the monitor and the
ATI V264GT/Pro 4Mb videocard while running under linux.  I suspect
possible over driving, but want to rule out any other possibilities as
well.  The monitor is being looked at by Viewsonic, but am wondering if
anyone has any ideas.

The exact problem is this:  While exiting from Xwindows to the terminal
screen mode the monitor goes fuzzy, makes a buzzing noise and then dies.
This has occured a few hours after installing Linux and again roughly
a week later on a replacement monitor which had been apparently running
Linux fine.  On both occasions this has been the exact same method that
has killed the monitor.  Linux was the operating system in use.  The
resolution of the Xwindows display was I think about 1280x1024 in 16bit
colour switiching to 600x800?? in terminal mode.  Its possible that there
is something in the software that is being run in the wrong order or
something like that.  Any help welcome.
