3.1.2 libXaw3d elf libs

Hello,
  I just got the Slackware 3.0.0 (elf), and I also retrieved the
libXaw3d libs from ftp.x.org, and when I put them in and
then run ldconfig, some things work ok, like xterm, it has
the nice 3d scrollbar, but other things won't load, saying
it can't load libXaw.so.6, but I have libXaw.so.6 symbolically
linked to the libXaw.so.6.0, the new 3d widget library.  On
my old (a.out) system, I made the change and it was
flawless, everything switched over nice.  But I'm thinking
I might have to recompile everything that's giving the
error, with the new library.  Is this something to do with
the ELF format or what?  Any help will of course be
greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

1. Wcl ELF and compiling ELF libs?

I tried to compile the Wcl-2.7 distribution and evidently it doesn't support ELF.
How can you compile old a.out libraries as ELF or make them work on an ELF system?

Please don't respond with the trivial answer (leave as a.out). :)
