xfree86 won′t work with intel i810 chipset

Post by Thomas Luckenede » Thu, 25 May 2000 04:00:00

hi all,

ive installed redhat 6.2 on an intel celeron 433 with an intel 810
chipset graphic card on board, and im not able to start x with a
greater resolution than 320x200.

ive tried it with xfree86 v3.6 and there was the problem, that the i810

chipset isnt recognized, therefore the video mode is always set to
320x200 ('generic vga mode'), although i inserted greater resolutions in

the xf86config file in the screen-section :-((.

ive also tried the new version xfree86 4.0, with the corresponding
xserver from the intel-home-page, but after i installed the xf810 server

and the install script completed without errors, i wasnt able to start
xfree86 -configure, due there was an error: 'you must have installed
glide... ...the libglide2.so cannot be found. aborting configuration
process'.

can anybody help me???

is there a possibility to work with i810 chipset with a 'good' screen
resolution or does anybody have an example, how i have to configure the
xserver?

thanx in advance,
thomas.

Yes. Under XFree 3.3.6, you'll need the agpgart and X server software from
Intel's website -- you did know that you need agpgart, which is a kernel
module? and it is source, so you need gcc _and_ the kernel headers (at
least, and maybe even the source code) to compile. And the kernel stuff
has to be the same version as the kernel you're running.

I haven't done the XFree 4.x stuff. From the error you described, you
need to install the libglade package.

xfree86 won′t work with intel i810 chipset

I had the same problem.  I downloaded the RPM for the 810 chipset.  Check
out http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/linuxinstal.htm .  I
was able to get the video up and running (after some struggle), but still
cannot startx unless I am logged on as root.  I am still trying to figure
that one out.

Allen,

I did exactly the same as you, and similarly, startx doesn't work.
*But*
if, when running Xconfigurator,  I click on the 'start X automatically'
button, then X comes up correctly when I am root, when I click on the
KDE
style, and it comes up correctly logged in as myself when I click on the
'default' style (which comes up as KDE).  Any other combinations don't
work -- I'm sure that I could figure them out with enough playing around
but it's the case of 'if it's not broke, don't fix it'.  Still, I don't
have a warm tummy feeling about it.

If I don't have it start up X automatically on bootup, then startx
doesn't work.  I have *no idea* what RedHat is doing when it starts
X itself.

1. XFree86 with Intel i810 chipset

Okay I have XFree86 3.3.5,  I've downloaded the two
RPM's from Intel, installed the two RPM's in my RPM
library via the RPM manager in KDE. I have the new
Xserver in the directory.  How do I use the agpgart.o
file? Do I have ro recompile my kernel?  The README's
say I need a new module, is this the agpgart.o file?
As you can tell I'm a newbie, and having to dive in the
deep end to get my desktop resolution above the
vga16 presets.  HELP!  I want to see the rest of my
desktop!
