Radeon and XFree86, almost there.

Post by skitzophil » Sat, 06 Jan 2001 07:53:06

I am a newbie and I'm having some problems.

I have Linux-Mandrake 7.2 installed. I installed XFree86 4.0.2 and ran
'XFree86 -configure' and it found everything correctly, I think.

But now when I run 'startx', i get this error.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Using -configure will only give you a minimal config file.
You still need to manually tweak it some.

At the DRI page there's a resource link with some example
XF86Config files that you can use as a base.

http://dri.sourceforge.net/
The resource link is near the bottom of the page.

Your error says no drivers found and no screens. Make sure you
specify in the config file the proper driver.
F.I. for my ATI card I have:

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Rage128"
    Driver      "ati"
    VendorName  "ATI"
    BoardName   "Rage 128 RF"
    [...]

The Driver setting and maybe Identifier are important.

The Screen section is where the card Identifier and monitor settings
are.

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen 0"
    Device      "Rage128"
    Monitor     "KDS VS-7i"
    DefaultDepth 16
    [...]

It might be a good idea to run good old xf86config to generate
a XF86Config file and then copy/paste stuff from the config file
generated by XFree86 -configure. The generating file should be
sitting in /root as XF86Config.new.
Also, xf86cfg can probably be used. Never used it myself.
