Xconfig for 21" sony trinitron monitor (ARDANT)

I am currently using X11 on a linux box with a 15" Mag monitor and
a S3 fahrenheid card. I have the possibility to get a 21" sony monitor
from an old 3D graphic workstation ARDANT. It is a very good monitor, but
the problem is that I have not the spec. of the monitor: i.e horiz. freq.,
vert. freq. and so on. I now only that the monitor was used
with a 1280x1024 true-color with 3D accelerator cards on an ARDANT. and it
appears to be a fixed frequency monitor (i,e it as no controls).
Is it possible to used it with X11 and Linux, and how can I configurate
it. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks          Marc

Hi,
I (sort of) got a monitor from a Stardent working.  It may be the same
monitor, or very similar.

This monitor has 137MHz bandwidth, sync-on-green, and around a 70Hz
vertical refresh.  I can dig up the specs, but the following modeline
seemed to work:

ModeLine "1280x1024" 135 1280 1328 1496 1704 1024 1028 1032 1075 -hsync -vsync

I'm not familiar with the Fahrenheit card, but my guess is that it won't
work.  You need something capable of a 135MHz dot clock and sync-on-green.
I think your best bet would be a #9 with at least 2MB of VRAM, the
S3-964 chipset, Bt485 ramdac, I believe this is the #9 GXE64 Pro, or
some similar name.  Don't get a Stealth 64 VRAM, as this card does not
do sync-on-green, even though the ramdac supports it.  That's what we
bought, and we can sort-of get it to work with our monitor by tee-ing
the HSync and VSync into green, but we'll have to build a proper
circuit for combining signals in order to get it to work properly.

1. Linux and a Sony Trinitron 21" monitor!

I just purchased a 21" Sony Trinitron Monitor.  It came with a graphics
card
- 4MB Cirrus Logic (CL5434).  The problem is that linux only uses half of
the screen.
I mean, Linux treats the middle of the screen as if it's the bottom of the
screen.
Any way to tell Linux to use the whole screen?  Any insight would be
greatly
appreciated.  By the way, I'm using Slackware 2.0.0, with the AHA2940
kernel.

Thanks!
