XFree-4.0.3 memory consumption?

XFree-4.0.3 memory consumption?

Post by Christian Hamache » Thu, 12 Apr 2001 20:00:43

Could anybody running XFree-4.0.[23] please do a top on their machine
and post what memory consumption they are seeing for X?

On my machine (RH7.0, XFree RPMs from rawhide, kernel 2.2.16, TNT
graphics board with NVIDIA kernel driver and GLX) I see a size of
up to *180M*, almost all of it resident! This can't be, can it?

Additionally, it seems like this size was slowly creeping up with
window creation and other X-intensive operations.

Thanks for your time,

XFree-4.0.3 memory consumption?

Post by S. Uma » Fri, 13 Apr 2001 01:32:40

Well,.......this confirms my findings a few days ago (just a little up the
newsgroup). The problem is the NVIDIA driver.....if you switch to nv
driver it consumes 50+MB only. Also, if you use konqueror browser
and try to load a very long list, kde grows out of control until it
crashes the system (this was my original motivation to investigate).
When I switched to nv all these problems disappeared.

However, some other drivers (Matrox G200) also seem to have this
problem so the memory leaking function may be in some other library.
Please report your problem to NVIDIA so that they investigate the
problem.

1. XFree-4.0.3 and Font-Problems

Hy
I can use my fonts ( + ttf ) only as root logging in from Console with
startx. Everything else ( kdm and startx as nonroot ) gives me some
standard fonts 10p and all other fonts are much too small ( 40p looks
like 4p ). It looks like a permission thing to me, but I can' t figure
it out. Thanks for every hint...
Ronald
