KDE 2.0 won't start???

Post by Andrew Davi » Thu, 16 Nov 2000 04:00:00

Running RH6.2 default install.
Installed KDE bin's for 6.2 via rpm
Rebooted
X (kdm) won't start automatically... gives following errors when typing
"startkde":

xsetroot: unable to open display ' '
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Can't determine DISPLAY. Aborting.
ksmserver: cannot connext to X server

Any ideas... did an install, not an upgrade (rpm -ivh... not -Uvh)

Try startx.

I am having the exact same problem using the exact same setup. Would
appreciate hearing if you get it fixed!

An answer from another user in a different newsgroup...

There's an error in the package. You need to be root and then edit
these files:
/etc/profile.d/kde.sh
/etc/profile.d/kde.csh

They set the $KDEDIR to /opt/kde2 but it should be /usr

1. X won't start after KDE 1.1 to 2.0 upgrade

I compiled kde 2.0 from scratch to upgrade from my current kde 1.1
installation. Following successful compilation, I found I was no longer able to
start X-windows ("startkde" is in my HOME/.xinitrc and I use startx to start
the whole process). I get the following error message:

------------start error message-----------
Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
_X11TransSoocketUNIXConnect: can't connect: Errno=111
--------------end error message----------

I can successfully start X and kde 2.0 from root, but not from a normal user
account.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ollie Acheson
