ATI Rage 128 (All-in-Wonder 128 16Mo) - Here is my config file

First, thanks to people that either sent me the Rage 128 server or provided
an alternate address to download it.

As some of you asked for, I provide here my config file. Configuration was
very easy. I did not put any clock line, as the server seems to be able to
select itself the best clock. I checked this by running X -probeonly,
looking for every mode what was the clock used : the values match the ones
provided in the card documentation (table of resolution / dot clock).

The only problem I had, is that the /etc/X11/X was a symbolic link to a
server, and that the /usr/bin/X11/X is another symbolic link to a potentialy
different server. I made all my tests with the second one, and did not
understand why startx didn't work (startx uses the first one) !

    Antoine.

Antoine,

I had this same problem. After a long struggle, I could configure properly.
I really don't remember what happened, but finally I made /etc/X11/X and
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/X point to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_Rage128 server. I
downloaded this XFCom_Rage128 from Suse site. Also Suse provided XF86Setup
that lists this Rage 128 card. Using this XF86Setup and meddling with the X
to make it point to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_Rage128, I finally could start the
X server! Gnome WM is started but, this crashes after sometime (freezes the
machine) and Ihave to reboot the system as the last option. I posted this
question at this same place and am waiting for response.

If you haven't had any success and want to try my config file, atleast to
get this working, I can post it in the reply.

Hari.

1. Xfree and ATI All-in-wonder 128 or ATI Rage fury 128

Hi everybody

I want to buy an ATI All-in-wonder 128.
Someone has this Videocard (or another one with ATI Rage 128bit chipset like
Rage fury) together with Linux? About Xfree?
I read the XFree Faq and I saw there no ATI RAGE 128 support...
Afterall can I use just simple VGA (640*480) (or better) even if XFREE
doesn't recognize the ATI Rage 128 chipset???

Sorry for my school english
Thanks a lot
